Recumbent Exercise Bike Review

by Maria on November 18, 2010

Hello again,

The subject matter of my post today will be the health and weight loss benefits (and some drawbacks) of the recumbent exercise bike.

The recumbent exercise bike is growing in popularity and becoming a consumer favorite piece of home gym exercise equipment, the main reason for that being that with the recumbent exercise bike you can achieve the desired health and weight loss benefits of cycling in the comfort of your own home:

  • Get a great cardio exercise.
  • Burn body fat and lose weight.
  • Develop muscle mass.
  • Strengthen and tone your lower body (your inner thighs, butt, calves, etc.)

The Recumbent Exercise Bike health and fitness benefits as opposed to the Upright Bike:

  • The recumbent exercise bike is far more ergonomic (has bio-mechanically correct frame and handlebar design) which offers more comfortable cardiovascular and rehab workout. It is equipped with a bucket seat which is much more comfortable than the tiny and hard seat that comes attached to the upright bike. This enables you to exercise for longer periods of time.
  • The reclined position makes it very low impact – reduces the strain on the lower back, knees and ankles, lessens the risk of posture problems and prevents you from tiring as easily as you would with an upright exercise bike. It eliminates sore hands, wrists and arms and the need to bend head, neck or back. Also, your glutes get a better work out in the reclined position.
  • Easy to use. It is ideal for people not used to exercising or very overweight people.
  • Improves bicycling performance and makes it easy to develop a rhythmic pace for better fat burning.
  • Builds and maintains cardiovascular endurance.
  • Because you are so much more balanced when sitting on a recumbent exercise bike compared to an upright bike, you can even do upper body workout at the same time using free exercise weights.
  • And if you move the seat closer to the pedals, you can even workout your lower abs.
  • The recumbent exercise bike is better suited to help you achieve physical therapy and rehab goals. It is excellent for people with lower back or neck pain issues and for rehab patients recovering from an injury or surgery, looking for smoothness and reliability.

Since working out on a recumbent exercise bike only tends to involve the leg and buttock muscles over a short range of motion, in order to make the exercise more effective for losing weight,  it may be best to exercise for longer periods of time to obtain the best fat burning effect and weight loss results.

Finally, the recumbent exercise bike is great for persons of all fitness levels – whether you are an athlete in training looking for stamina building, an off season cycling enthusiast looking for a fitness cycle, someone just trying to lose weight and tone your body or a patient recovering from an injury or surgery – the recumbent exercise bike is for you!

We are going to be seeing more recumbent bicycles on the road, as well!

Listen… I don’t know about you, but I think this comfortable and effective exercise machine is fantastic! I can’t wait to start using it at my gym! Let me know what you think.

We’ll talk again soon.

All the best,
Maria
